Authorship Criteria

Authorship and Contributorship Policy

Jurnal Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat – JPKM establishes authorship criteria to ensure that every individual listed as an author of an article has made a substantial contribution to the community service activities and manuscript preparation. This policy aims to uphold fairness in the allocation of academic credit, transparency in contributions, and accountability and integrity in scholarly publishing.

1. Criteria for Authorship

An individual may be listed as an author of an article if they meet all of the following criteria:

  1. Substantial contribution to the activities. Make a meaningful contribution to the formulation of ideas, program planning, identification of partners’ problems and needs, development of solutions, design of activity methods, program implementation, data collection, or analysis and interpretation of activity results.

  2. Contribution to manuscript preparation. Participate in drafting the article or critically reviewing its intellectual content, including the appropriateness of the methods, interpretation of results, discussion, and conclusions.

  3. Approval of the final manuscript. Read and approve the final version of the article to be submitted to or published in Jurnal Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat – JPKM.

  4. Accountability for article integrity. Agree to be accountable for their contributions and to work collaboratively with the other authors to ensure that any questions concerning the accuracy, validity, or integrity of any part of the article are appropriately addressed.

All individuals listed as authors must meet these criteria. Individuals who provide assistance but do not meet all authorship criteria may be acknowledged in the Acknowledgments section if their contributions are relevant and the necessary consent has been obtained.

2. Contributions That Do Not Automatically Qualify for Authorship

Authorship must not be granted solely on the basis of a person's title, academic status, institutional position, or relationship with the individuals conducting the activities. The following contributions, when performed independently and without satisfying the other authorship criteria, do not automatically entitle an individual to be listed as an author:

  • Providing funding or administrative support alone.

  • Holding a position as an institutional leader, program chair, or supervisor of the activity organizers.

  • Providing facilities, equipment, venues, or access to community partners.

  • Providing technical assistance, documentation, or data collection without any additional substantive contribution.

  • Performing language editing, proofreading, or formatting alone.

  • Participating in ceremonial activities or delivering speeches without making an intellectual contribution to the article.

Such contributions may be acknowledged in the Acknowledgments section in accordance with the actual assistance provided.

3. Determination of Author Order

The order of authors shall be determined by mutual agreement among all authors, taking into account the extent of each individual's intellectual contribution and involvement in the community service activities and article preparation.

The first author is generally the individual who makes the primary contribution to the development of ideas, implementation or analysis of the activities, and manuscript preparation. However, the final author order must be mutually agreed upon by all authors based on their actual contributions.

The corresponding author is responsible for coordinating communication with the editor, ensuring the completeness of authorship metadata, confirming approval from all authors, and responding to the editorial process. The corresponding author does not necessarily have to be the first author, provided that this arrangement has been agreed upon by all authors.

4. Responsibilities of Authors

Each author is responsible for:

  1. Ensuring that their stated contributions accurately reflect the work they actually performed.

  2. Ensuring the originality of the manuscript and the accuracy of the data, documentation, and information presented.

  3. Ensuring that all sources are appropriately cited and that all references are accurately listed.

  4. Disclosing relevant conflicts of interest and sources of funding.

  5. Obtaining the necessary permissions for the use of data, photographs, documentation, and information relating to community partners or activity participants.

  6. Reading and approving the final version of the manuscript before publication.

  7. Cooperating in responding to inquiries, corrections, or allegations of academic integrity violations relating to the article.

All authors must understand that being listed as an author represents both recognition of their contributions and acceptance of academic responsibility for the publication.

5. Author Contribution Statement

Authors are required to provide an author contribution statement explaining each author's role in the community service activities and article preparation, in accordance with the journal's prescribed format.

Contributions may include conceptualization, activity planning, identification of community partners' needs, solution development, program implementation, data collection, data analysis, manuscript drafting, critical review, revision, and approval of the final manuscript.

The contribution statement must accurately reflect the actual roles performed and must be approved by all authors. Authors must not claim contributions they did not make or omit the substantial contributions of individuals who meet the authorship criteria.

6. Changes in Authorship

Any request to add or remove an author or change the order of authors after manuscript submission must be accompanied by a clear justification and written consent from all listed authors, including the individual to be added or removed, as applicable.

Changes to authorship after an article has been accepted or published shall be reviewed by the editorial team based on the reasons provided, the consent of the parties involved, and the journal's publication integrity policies. Authorship changes must not be made unilaterally and are not automatically approved.

If an authorship dispute cannot be resolved by the authors themselves, the journal may request clarification or a recommendation from the relevant institution. The journal reserves the right to suspend the relevant editorial or publication process until the matter has been adequately resolved.

7. Acknowledgment of Contributors and Use of Artificial Intelligence

Individuals who provide assistance but do not meet all authorship criteria may be acknowledged in the Acknowledgments section, with a description of the assistance provided. The inclusion of an individual's name as a contributor must be transparent and, where necessary, undertaken with that individual's consent.

Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, including chatbots and AI-based writing assistance tools, cannot be listed as authors because they cannot assume academic responsibility for the content of an article. The use of AI that contributes to manuscript preparation or processing must be disclosed in accordance with the journal's applicable AI use policy. Human authors remain responsible for the accuracy, originality, source attribution, and integrity of the entire article.

8. Enforcement of the Policy

Jurnal Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat – JPKM reserves the right to request clarification regarding author contributions if discrepancies or suspected cases of honorary authorship, guest authorship, ghost authorship, or other forms of authorship misconduct are identified.

All allegations of misconduct shall be handled objectively, confidentially, and proportionately in accordance with the journal's publication ethics policies. Actions may include requests for clarification, revisions to authorship metadata, suspension of the editorial process, publication corrections, or other appropriate measures based on the findings of the investigation and applicable regulations.

Through this policy, Jurnal Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat – JPKM is committed to upholding transparency, fairness, accountability, and authorship integrity in every article it publishes.
