Abstract

The development of information and communication technology forces humans to adapt and think critically in using it. Humans develop self-concept through social interactions supported by communication technology. However, the use of social media such as Instagram shows excessive dependence and negative impacts on users' mental health and critical thinking. This research aims to examine the impact of visual waste and information technology hegemony on human existence. The research method used is a literature review that analyzes theories of social philosophy and sociology related to the development of information and communication technology. The research results show that humans must use critical thinking to manage freedom and responsibility in the use of technology. The contribution of this research is to provide a new perspective on the importance of critical awareness in social interactions in the information technology era, as well as avoiding negative determinations of self-existence due to visual waste and technological hegemony.
